The Road to You bu Marilyn Bryant

The Road to YouSynopsis:

Sometimes the only road to the truth...is one you’ve never taken.

Until I found Gideon’s journal in the tool shed — locked in the cedar box where I’d once hidden my old diary — I’d been led to believe my brother was dead. But the contents of his journal changed all that.

The Road to Discovery...
Two years ago, Aurora Gray’s world turned upside down when her big brother Gideon and his best friend Jeremy disappeared. Now, during the summer of her 18th birthday, she unexpectedly finds her brother’s journal and sees that it’s been written in again. Recently. By him.

The Road to Danger...
There are secret messages coded within the journal’s pages. Aurora, who’s unusually perceptive and a natural puzzle solver, is hell bent on following where they lead, no matter what the cost. She confides in the only person she feels can help her interpret the clues: Donovan McCafferty, Jeremy’s older brother and a guy she’s always been drawn to — even against her better judgment.

The Road to You...
Reluctantly, Donovan agrees to go with her and, together, they set out on a road trip of discovery and danger, hoping to find their lost brothers and the answers to questions they’ve never dared to ask aloud.

In that expectant space between silence and melody, our trip began...

The Road to You
The Road to You by Marilyn Brant
Rating: 4 of 5 stars

I almost gave up on The Road to You with all the violence surrounding our children's schools and the national events. I thought it would be too much in addition to all the drama hovering around my own daughter. It started to ring a little too close to home ; alas I'm glad I didn't give up on it.

While mysteries normally aren't my cup of tea unless it's heavily cloaked in romance. I'm woman enough to admit to admit I was completely drawn into the search for the two friend who vanished without a trace. While you can read between the lines of the budding relationship between Aurora and Donavan; the search for their missing brothers always remained the goal. And the mystery surrounding the circumstances is as much a character as the character themselves.

When the journal that Aurora brother was always writing in made a sudden appearance two years after the boys disappear . Aura can't help but know it's a plea from her brother to come find him. 17-year-old Aurora then enlist the older brother of Jeremy (her brothers best friend) Donavan (who she has crushed on forever and a day) to help her search. Reluctantly Donavan accompanies Aurora on a short trip to put an end to Aurora delusions only to discover more in 24-hours than the police did in two years. Thus begins Aurora and Donavan's road trip down Rt. 66 to uncovering the truth behind the brother's sudden an mysterious disappearance moments where they are afraid to hope and moments where they desperate to know the truth. Though as the reader towards the end it was clear who the bad cops were, still the mystery of what happened to the missing friends wasn't. However, when things come to a head and everything is out in the open- it was an ending I never expected. And one you will have to read to know for yourself. Sorry NO SPOILERS here!!

What an emotional journey both Aurora and Donavan themselves on. My only grumble of a complaint isn't much of one at all. I was just a little disappointed that the author after the big reveal continued to wrap things up in a nice tightly bow assuring the reader of this being a single. I for one could smell a trilogy had it ended at a certain point- such as a second book as a possible follow up on the events of the missing friends that lead to the siblings search and beyond. Can't say too much or I will give up the goods. As well as a third book that follows up on all the characters and relations that put the tight bow back in place.

On a side note I read I read The Road to You from my kindle and it was very difficult to see the inserts from the journal entries. I had to stop and expand the lettering height and it was still difficult. Though I'm not sure anything can be done about this.

All and all you can see and read that my mystery reviews are lacking. But please don't let this stop you. I did enjoy the book. If you enjoy realistic mysteries with some coy romance between the lines you can't pass this up.

One final thing.... I agree with Donavan, "Disco is a Fad!"

Book Tour - The UNDERGROUND by TR Graves

Underground (Secrets, #2) by T. R. Graves
Release date: October 13, 2013
Age Group:  New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Synopsis: Betrayal and loss have changed Emily Riddle in ways she never thought possible. With a death wish guiding her every move, she's willing to compromise her morals, ethics, and instincts to bring to justice the men who've broken her heart... even if that means living a life underground, being someone she's not, and pretending to respect the very men she's positioning herself to take down.

As soon as she teams up with the district attorney, Tope Bryson, and agrees to be a member of his covert operation, she returns to the commune and convinces the patriarchal leaders she is the most qualified person to take on roles traditionally assigned to men. Desperate and without options, Owen, the commune's leader and Emily's father, agrees to a temporary change.

Emily takes full advantage of the opportunity and quickly proves to him, much to her brothers' dismay, that he can't live without having her in those critical roles and that she may be the best candidate for his next in command.

She and Tope quickly realize that the men of the commune consider a woman who threatens the good ol' boy system that's been in place for decades public enemy number one. Determined to protect Emily from her brothers, Tope plants an undercover officer and charismatic law student, Noah Babineaux, in the commune. Neither Tope nor Emily is prepared for the attention Noah pays her.

With a nothing-else-matters attitude, Emily focuses on her underground mission and pushes down her hate, anger, grief, and... blossoming feelings until they threaten to explode from the inside and tear her apart. It's a race against the clock to get the evidence necessary—and ultimately, the retaliation Emily craves—before a life of submissive brutality, or sibling jealousy, kills her.

EXCERPT

Armed with a plan to help Tess and no longer spiraling down, I feel stronger. I feel like I might be the one and only person who can and will bring the commune leaders—my father and brothers—to justice. The reason I'll be successful should be depressing, but it's not.

I have a death wish and don't give a rat's ass if I live or die.

Absent the fear that's driven everything I've ever done, I feel invincible. There's an end in sight. I feel it. I'm sure of it. I take a deep, cleansing breath and stretch my muscles. Really uncurl my body for the first time in days.

None of them will ever see me coming.

A marrow-deep laugh wants to bubble its way to the surface, but I know Owen will find it odd. Rather than bringing him closer, it may drive him further away. Instead, I submissively demure. That's what he's looking for and that's what I will give him.

"I'll be back here around noon tomorrow. You be ready to go. You hear?"

He reaches over and acts as if he's going to stroke my hair, but he doesn't. He grabs a handful of it and tilts my head back, waiting for me to look him in the eyes and let him know I plan to do exactly as he asks. I nod because I know he expects it of me.

Irritated by the nod, he says, "When we get back to the commune, I'm gonna tan your hide for all of this. I'll tell you another thing. I ain't puttin' up with this weaklin' bullshit one more day."

I hate you!

"Yes, sir," I say aloud.

A Peek Inside

Fearsome Excerpt #1:

Carson takes a couple long strides and is in my face before I can count to one. He has to lean over to be at my eye level. He places his hands on the counter on either side of me so I’m trapped. “He thinks you’re going to stay here for good. He thinks he has a chance with you. I want you to be honest with him and explain that you’ll be going back to your real life in New York.”
He moves so close to my face, I find myself staring back into his beautiful eyes that never leave mine. He is nothing like Dylan; I can see that in this moment. Carson is only three years older than his brother; however, he might as well be twenty years older. He carries a weight—a burden in him—that is marked by a serious, unwavering demeanor. I think a part of me remembers this about him and another part of me remembers trying to coax the fun side out of him. I know I have seen him laugh, the memory is there, buried with all the other fuzzy images, yet right now, I only see a man who is trying to look strong because there’s something that worries him.
If he’s trying to be intimidating and rouse my anxiety, it’s working. After a short stare-off between us, he moves back. My small victory is that he seems to be at a loss for words, too.

Excerpt #2:

I’m still daydreaming when he stops abruptly to pick up his toolbox and I bash right into his back. Perfect. Didn’t I already do this with Dylan?
Carson drops the box and turns around to catch me. “I’m sorry, did I do that?”
“No, it was me.” I rub my nose.
He’s holding me by the waist, pulling me into him, but it’s not a déjà vu of Dylan. Carson is something else—something I like very much—and I suspect that being torn between two men in my own imaginary, lovelorn world is a sign of my immaturity. At least, that would be the first thing my mother would say before she asks what they do for a living. My hands are wedged between us, resting against his hard abdomen.
Carson doesn’t let go, as if he’s thinking of something to say or thinking of pulling one of those fast Blackard kisses. “This could be awkward,” he says and releases his grip on me while his hands remain hovering by me.
I’m not sure if he’s having the same thought as me, that a kiss would be awkward since I’m going out with Dylan, or if it’s awkward because he sees me as some virginal geek and he’s never touched one in person before. It’s awkward because I’m over-thinking the whole scenario!

Excerpt #3:

Am I still so naïve and foolish that I cannot truly see the wonderful man in front of me who cares about me?
I place my hands on Dylan’s chest and feel his strong heartbeat underneath the thin T-shirt. He is so attractive that I begin to consider lewd thoughts to dismiss my earlier anger. Without deliberating further, I start taking off his T-shirt. He looks a little bewildered, but assists in removing his shirt. I rub my hands up and down his muscular torso and push him back towards the porch wall. Then Dylan watches as I unbutton my blouse. A wanton expression overcomes his face as I stand before him in my see-thru lace demi bra. I step out of my skirt and underwear and begin kissing him as I put my hand down his jeans, aggressively groping his hardness.
“Okay,” Dylan rasps and then he turns me around so my back is against the wall.
He unbuttons his jeans and pulls a condom from his wallet then hoists me up using his weight and the wall to brace me in place before he’s in me. I wrap my legs around his waist and move frantically with his thrusts.

Excerpt #4:

Dylan’s reaction is evident. I’m at the end of the hall in the kitchen doorway when Carson answers the door and Dylan’s face drops. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
“Hi, brother,” Carson greets him with a smugness in his voice. “I was working on the kitchen and thought I’d stay for dinner. I see you’re making your eggplant parm. Wouldn’t want to miss that.” He holds the door open for Dylan who storms through with two bottles of wine in each hand.
“Oh, fuck you,” Dylan snaps and head towards me. He kisses me on the cheek. “Hi. So we’ve got company.” He shakes his head at me.
“Here, let me open the wine.” Carson squeezes between Dylan and me, grabbing the bottles. “You cook. Jess and I will drink this fine vino you’ve brought us.”
“I didn’t bring it for you,” Dylan counters.
Carson studies the wine label and raises his eyebrows. “You’ve dropped an impressive little bundle on these two gems. Can’t wait to drink it.”
Dylan ignores him and makes his way into the kitchen where he begins to pull items out of the fridge along with pots and pans from the cupboards. I’m caught in the middle of some brotherly group dynamic that is foreign to me, so I stay out of it and keep quiet.
Carson uncorks a bottle of wine with a switchblade he pulls out of his pocket. I don’t know whether to be unnerved or impressed that he carries a knife and knows how to open a bottle of wine with it. He makes one slice around the seal, thuds the base of the bottle against one of the vertical beams along the wall and then pulls the cork out with his teeth. I’ve never seen anything like it. He looks even sexier merely by doing that little move. His hands are full with the bottle in one hand and the knife and cork in the other, so he pulls a kitchen chair out with his foot.
“Have a seat, milady, and join me in a glass of the grape,” he mimics a thick Scottish brogue.
“Oh, please,” Dylan says over his shoulder as he slams pans on the range.
I laugh and sit down. Carson smiles at me and pours a tiny amount of the wine into a juice glass for me. I take a little sip and nod approvingly. I know nothing about wine.
